About Us

Welcome to Green Space, Washington DC’s first eco-friendly, socially responsible plant and flower design studio, located in The Shops at Georgetown Park.  We provide organic flowers and plants in Washington DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia, including: Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Springfield, Reston, Herndon, Centreville, Ashburn, Sterling and Annandale.

All of our products are organic, recycled, biodegradable, fair trade and/or locally sourced from small farms and artisans. We feature a stunning sampling of orchids as well as many other gorgeous plants, which are all highly regarded for benefiting health and improving air quality by removing very specific toxins from your home or office environment.

Our hand picked selection of lush, fresh cut flowers can be purchased by the stem or creatively arranged to complement any décor. They are certified organic and go a long way in proving that in the right hands, “green” can also be chic and sophisticated. Finally, the packaging and containers that complement our items are all either recycled, biodegradable, fair trade or eco-friendly.

The Green Word

What does it all mean to us?

  • Organic
We aim to have our living products be organic. To us (and the Organic Trade Association), that means that the plant or flower is based on a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers. To you, that means a flower or plant that arrives in your house is free of chemicals and promotes sustainable farming practices.

  • Sustainable
We aim to have all our practices promote sustainable principles. To us, that means using flowers and plants that are easily restored, replenishing the soil and water supply to support future growth, and harvesting in a way that doesn’t damage the growing environment.

  • Biodegradable
We aim to use products that are biodegradable. To us, that means when pots and containers are disposed of, they can easily be broken down to be reused for other products or recycled. In order to do this, we pay special attention to the types of materials all our products are made from, and only buy from companies that do the same.

  • Fair-trade
We aim to purchase products that are fair-trade. To us, that means being part of a movement to support farmers and laborers to receive fare wages and use environmentally friendly practices in their production. This is a huge task considering the areas in the world that flowers and tropical plants arrive from. We are committed to changing practices through our purchasing power of fair trade items.

  • Composting
We aim to compost all of our flower and plant products that have not been used. To us, that means going the extra mile to assure that the waste is not thrown into regular trash streams, but rather it goes through decomposition to contribute to the creation of mulch and other organic re-use products.

  • Veriflora
We aim to buy products certified by Veriflora, an agricultural sustainability certification and eco-labeling program recognized as the gold-standard in the floriculture and horticulture industries.  VeriFlora delivers tangible results that benefit growers, workers, consumers, the environment and the bottom-line, meets the growing consumer demand for sustainable grown cut flowers and potted plants, and helps assure product quality and longevity. In this way, we know what we are buying and are confident in passing on these benefits to customers.

Plants and Health

Have you ever looked at a plant, and thanked it for what it does for you? Well, we’re not suggesting you do that necessarily, but what many people don’t know about plants are the positive benefits they have on improving your indoor air quality.

Everyday, people in the United States spend 90% of their time indoors, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Indoor environments can have anywhere from 2 to 10 times more toxins and chemicals than outdoor environments. Common toxins include volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde from furniture, carpeting, and household products. In addition, everyday humans emit bioeffulents from their body. All this equals up to an indoor environment that may trigger allergies or asthma; exacerbate respiratory ailments; and cause irritations including skin dryness and headaches.

Plants are no miracle drug, but they have been around a long time doing what they do, and doing it well. That means removing toxins from the air through a natural transpiration process, providing humidity during winter, thus reducing dust mite exposure and allergy inflammation, and creating a more living beautiful space. And the benefits continue. Having plants has been associated with biophilia, a scientific term for the affinity humans have towards the natural environment, based in evolution and ecology. Research has documented the effects of occupants living in spaces with more plants and better views of green spaces as having reduced stress levels, improved well-being, and increased productivity.

We are located in the Georgetown Park Shopping Mall,
convenient to the Washington metro area, Maryland and Northern Virginia.
